Personal data
Ambassador Vu Quang Minh was born in Hanoi. He joined the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Viet Nam in 1990 and has held various positions in different departments of the Ministry. His expertise covers a diverse range of areas, including international relations; political and security issues (including territorial disputes and border issues); economic diplomacy, economic development, trade dispute settlement, trade and investment promotion, trade liberalization, globalization and international economic integration.
Ambassador Vu Quang Minh was the Sherpa of Viet Nam at the G20 Summit in Germany in 2017.
His wife, Ms. Nguyen Minh Hanh, is also a diplomat, and they have two sons.
Education
From 1983 – 1988: Moscow Institute of International Relations (MGIMO), the Soviet Union, majoring in International Economic Relations.
From 1993 – 1995: Princeton University, USA, Master of Public Affairs (MPA) under the Fulbright scholarship.
Participating in a number of economic and public policy management executive training programs at Harvard University (USA).
Foreign languages: Vietnamese, English and Russian (fluent); French (basic skills); Khmer (limited communication skills); German (starting to learn conversational German).
Key career milestones
In 1990: started working at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in the Soviet Union Department, Viet Nam’s National Committee for UNESCO (Department of Cultural Affairs and UNESCO), and the National ASEAN Secretariat (ASEAN Department).
From 1997– 2002: Secretary to Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs Nguyen Manh Cam, seconded at the Government Office; Deputy Director-General, Office of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
From 2002 – 2006: Counselor, Head of Economic Section, Embassy of Viet Nam in the US.
From 2006 – 2011: Deputy Director-General, then Director-General of the Department of Multilateral Economic Cooperation, Department of Economic Affairs, Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
From 10.2011: Assistant Minister, Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
From 2011 – 2014: Ambassador of Viet Nam to the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland.
From 2014 – 2017: Assistant Minister, Director General of the Economic Affairs Department, Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
From 11.2017: Vice Minister of Foreign Affairs.
From 2018 – 2021: Ambassador of Viet Nam to the Kingdom of Cambodia.
From 9.2021: Vice Minister of Foreign Affairs.
From 3.2022: Ambassador of Viet Nam to the Federal Republic of Germany.
Hobbies
Ambassador Vu Quang Minh’s hobbies include music (contemporary and classical), playing classical guitar, movies, reading books, literature, including poems by German poet Heinrich Heine and Thus said Zarathustra (Also Sprach Zarathustra) by German Philosopher Friedrich Nietzsche. He also enjoys chess, table tennis, swimming and golf.
